The acquisition and use of commercial software or off-the-shelf components (COTS) is poorly served by traditional approaches. The Software Engineering Institute has published a process for the specification, identification and integration of such components. Known as The Evolutionary Process for Integrating COTS-based systemsSM (EPICSM), it can be integrated with the Rational Unified Process, estabishing a synergistic approach to executing a software architecture.
